Akumal is a small, beach front tourist resort 100 km (62 miles) south of Cancún, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The town was founded for scuba divers by Pablo Bush Romero, a Mexican businessman, diver, writer, historian, and archaeologist. The white sandy beaches set against the turquoise Sea at Akumal and Half Moon Bay are exquisite. The protected areas around the reef are ideal for diving because of the abundant sea life in the waters below.
Sea turtles come to Akumal to lay their eggs and Akumal is one of the most amazing places for snorkelers and divers because of its turtles and reef structures. Diving takes place on the same barrier reef as Cozumel but offers many more tourist activities, like exploring the ruins of Tulum and Chichen Itza, zip lining above the jungle or visiting the nearby eco parks and diving in Cenotes. Akumal is truly a diver's paradise, founded by divers and protected by divers.
Please note: While Akumal Bay is closed to commercial snorkeling tours, we still provide snorkeling tours to areas outside of Akumal bay. Diving and fishing are unaffected by the new regulations.
We'd love to show you around!
